Story : In central Bangkok, all residential develop- ment has evolved to densely-living design. Living boxes over boxes are typical regardless their their position in luxury scale bar. We have observed this trend and asked a question when started working on this proj- ect “Can we reshape theses boxes, giving them a mid-air living with a landed-house- like environment, yet retains economic sense for development purpose?”. We borrowed a simple idea of thorough ventilation and sheltered balcony which are generally found in tropical-traditional houses and aim to implement them in a larger-scale context. Balcony acts as a transitional space for various activities and in the same time al- lows natural wind and light into other spaces for a comfortable living. In The Lofts Silom, 4-main vertical voids along with porous opening over building envelope are the project key ideas. The implementation of these features provides a comfortable environment where seasonal winds will naturally cross ventilate through lift lobby and corridor on residential floors. Natural light could indirectly lit corridors space and lift lobbies giving a natural illu- mination during the day. The 4 main vertical voids act as a internal wind chimneys where internal hot air rises while drawing external cool air inward. In a micro scale, sizable-more-squarish sheltered verandah were introduced in numbers of residential units. Visually, it is an extended space between interior and veran- dah space, Practically, it could comfortably accommodate family activities such as read- ing, working, gardening, painting, playing, partying etc. over this area. In particular, these verandah were sheltered in which its space could be conveniently utilized over the day in various weather conditions. Altogether, natural ambience were carefully crafted and introduced for a comfortable liv- ing environment. This unique spatial design defined a fresh luxury of high-rise living.
